Who We Are and What We Offer

A Self Catering Cottage in St John's Chapel, Weardale, Co Durham

Thank you for stopping by as you search for your perfect holiday stay.

We have fallen in love with Weardale, and want to share it with you.  Our aim has been to create a warm and welcoming space to make your time with us a truly memorable one.

Whether you’re planning a quiet stay locally, or a cycle ride along the 'Roof of England', or a walking break in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our cottage will be your cosy, comfortable retreat to return to time and again.  We have WiFi if you wish to stay in touch, and we are dog friendly on the basis that you please respect our home.  (We're happy to have up to two well behaved dogs stay with you;  but downstairs only please, and not on our furniture).

Our village is wonderfully welcoming, with two pubs, a fabulous cafe, and a well stocked convenience store; all within a 5 minute walk from our front door.  We are situated at the edge of our village, and there are countryside walks from the doorstep as well as an abundance of places to visit slightly further away.

We are fortunate to border Cumbria and Northumberland from County Durham; it's a fabulous base from which to explore these glorious areas.

Enjoy your time in our cottage in Weardale.  We hope you love it here as much as we do.

Michael and Tracey

What's in a name?

Our cottage is named for the (now) obsolete word for Lead.

There is a rich heritage of lead mining in Weardale, and we are keen to preserve that history.  Many of the lead mining sites in County Durham are preserved as scheduled ancient monuments by English Heritage.

The area is equally rich in wildlife, ecology and history.  There is so much to explore here.  Make sure you leave yourselves plenty of time! You can read more about some of the nearby places to visit by clicking this link.

Indoors, our cottage has a small entrance hall leading into the living room, with a dining kitchen beyond. Upstairs are two bedrooms; a larger master bedroom and a smaller double room.  There is a family bathroom, with shower over the bath, and a separate hand shower. Outdoors, there is a terrace and an enclosed, lawned garden looking out over the river to fields beyond.  It is a beautiful, calm place to sit in the afternoon sunshine. There is a secure bike shed to the parking area, and an outside tap to the patio.

The small village of St John's Chapel is set in Weardale and the area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The North Pennines is also an UNESCO Global Geopark.  We invite you into our cottage to explore Weardale's history, its outlying areas, and to feel at home within its walls.

Living area

Cosy and comfortable, yet light and spacious, this room has a three seater sofa and two arm chairs.  There is a Smart TV, and a FreeSat box.  There is a multi-fuel stove for those cooler evenings, with logs and fuel available for your use. The cottage is oil central heated on a timer for your convenience.

Master Bedroom

The main bedroom features a king size brass bed with anti allergy, soft, white bedlinen. There is plenty of storage space, as well as an airing cupboard suitable for drying damp clothing.

From the window, there are views across open countryside to Chapel Fell.  It provides a soft and comforting place in which to relax, and enjoy a peaceful nights' sleep.

Towels and a hairdryer are provided, together with a hot water bottle, just in case you need it.
